Now that Ryder is one year old, and more independent, I am able to start tackling design projects again. My husband and I have decided not to go the daycare route, instead, I am with Ryder through the day and work a few hours in the evenings on design projects when my husband returns home from work. It’s a bit exhausting, but I am only taking on projects that interest me and that have no crazy time-sensitive deadlines.

Thought I would share a couple of projects I have been working on this spring:

The Originals 2012 – The Originals is an arts awards gala that showcases local Saint John NB artist performances and presents awards to SJ artists for their work. I am collaborating with Judith Mackin (Punch Productions), and multi-media artist Amy Ash on this year’s event collateral (logo(s), poster, program etc…). The Originals 2012 Awards show will take place May 31st at the Imperial Theatre. It is an amazing event…a real celebration of arts in the community in every form, dance, music, literary, film…you name it! :) To find out more on this event and how to purchase tickets CLICK HERE.

I was nominated in the Popular Music category in 2010 and also had the amazing opportunity to perform one of my compositions“Chasing Sunsets” with the Juno nominated, Saint John String Quartet …a highlight of my music career. Watch my performance with the SJ String Quartet from the Originals 2010 HERE.

ArtsLink NB – Just finished preparing all the collateral for The ArtsLink 2012 Annual Forum and AGM. The event takes place this weekend (April 20-21) at the Dieppe Arts and Culture Centre (NB). The event will feature a performance by the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada and a film produced by the NB VAEA. The 2 day conference also includes artist workshops and panel discussions + a chance to network with other people in the industry. Year 1

We made it! Ryder turned 1 on the 22nd of March. We celebrated with friends, family, balloons and chocolate cake :) I can’t believe how fast my baby is growing up! His birthday was a very emotional day for me…I had my eye on the clock the entire day and kept thinking back on the day he was born and what I was doing at that time…10:00am…water broke…11:00am arrived at the hospital…11:30am…contractions started…3:00pm epidural…6:00pm time to push…11:20pm…Ryder came into my world…what a crazy day…it was like a dream when I think back. He is a dream. My little dream come true.

A mother of 2 said to me the other day…”The days might seem long, but the years go by fast.”

Here is a soup recipe the whole family can enjoy! Ryder, now almost 10 months old, eats it up and practically licks the bowl!

Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash Soup

1 onion, chopped
9 cups stock (veg or chicken)
3 med sweet potatoes (peeled & cubed)
1 butternut squash (peeled & cubed)
6 tbsp butter
1/4 cup maple syrup
*1 tbsp red curry paste (optional)
3 sprigs fresh or dried thyme
1/8 tsp nutmeg
Salt and Pep to taste

Saute onions in the butter. Add curry and simmer 6 mins. Add squash and potatoes, thyme, maple syrup and stock and cook until veggies are soft.

Puree and serve! If you want to get fancy, serve with a dollop of plain yogurt or sour cream and a few chopped chives or sprigs of cilantro.

Welcome 2012

Happy New Year!

Like most people on New Years day, I like to reflect and remenisce on the passing year ..2011 brought some wonderful moments and memories as well as a few bumps :/

The birth of my son was of course the highlight of the year for me…(anyone who heard me on CBC radio over the holidays already knows this :) ) He is the best thing to ever happen in my life :) He is happy, healthy and oh so sweet. I love him more than I could ever imagine. He is my sweetie pie :) 9 months old now and he is changing in looks and personality every day. He is so bright and full of life and energy. His favorite thing to do these days is point to lights. Whenever we enter a room, he points out the lights on the ceiling/walls and makes a “whooshahusha” sound. I think it means LIGHT :) He smiles at anyone who looks at him and says hello. His hair has grown so much…it just flies in every direction on his head and grows over his ears…he could use a little hair gel in the morning :) What a funny boy. He is a joy and makes me laugh every day.

Just before Christmas, I lost one of the most important people in my life… my Grandmother Gass…my Mom’s Mother (Florence Winnifred Gass (Titus). She would have been 88 on December 26th. She lived next door to my parents house and was like a 2nd mother to me and my sisters and brothers growing up. I loved her so much. I can’t believe she is gone. I miss stopping by to visit with her …she would always greet me at her back door with a heart to heart hug and a “Hi Honey” or “Hi Dear” :) I am so grateful and feel ever so blessed to have shared such a significant part of my life with her. She was a beautiful and gentle soul. I miss her and think of her often. Before she passed, she asked me if I would sing “Amazing Grace” at her funeral…I don’t know how, but I managed to get through the song without breaking down during the service. I just kept thinking to myself that she was there in the room listening… She had asked me to sing a special verse in the song that she had learned at her new church…it was a verse I had never heard until now…I had to look it up on YouTube to figure out the melody…it is beautiful…“My chains are gone, I’ve been set free, my God my Saviour has ransomed me, and like a flood his mercy reins, unending love, amazing grace.” (listen/view video here)

I look forward to this new year and what it will bring. I plan to continue to love my husband :) and to be a good mother to Ryder. I plan to eat healthy, exercise, be creative, be positive and not sweat the small stuff :) Looking forward to working on my new album this year too! Heading to Cape Breton in the spring to lay down some sweet vocals :) more on the record soon!

Best wishes for the new year!!

Tiny Prints

I am happy to share this lovely website/store (www.TinyPrints.com) – this site has hundreds of sweet templates for birth announcements, greeting cards, invitations etc for any and all occasions – print quality and paper options are beautiful, all cards come with lovely envelopes – turnaround is quick – and pricing is pretty reasonable for the quality and great service.

I could have spent an hour or 2 putting a card together, but with little time on my hands these days, it was a quick and easy way to set up and print a sweet card in minutes! :)

Here is this years Christmas card I put together using their template, fonts and colour options. As long as you have a good quality photo to insert into their template you are all set!

Cheerleader

I read this quote in a Parenting magazine today – “As parents, we’re good at being our children’s cheerleaders – but we need to cheer for ourselves too.”

Time Flies

Oh Blog, I have not forgotten about you!…Life just got busy over the past couple of months and it was hard trying to keep up! Lots of “Firsts” and new things on the go in Baby Land and Music World :)

#1 Teething: Ryder sprouted his 2 bottom teeth when he was only 4 months, he is now 7 months and he has 4 top teeth pushing through and 2 more on the bottom! :/ It seems once they start, they don’t stop! The drooling has been unreal! We go through many shirt changes in the run of a day! His poor neck, chin and chest get raw and red from the drool :/ *TIP* Vaseline or other glossy like cremes applied to drool rashes only holds in moisture, instead keep it clean and dry with just a warm wet clothe. An over the counter topical creme called Ratio-Nystatin works really well and is Dr. recommended :)

#2 First Cold: I had just started to establish a great nap/sleep routine with Ry then all hell broke loose with teething, then a nasty cold, then an ear infection and then a cough that required a puffer and antibiotic to clear up…ugh :/ So sad to see my baby sick…so helpless. *TIP* We purchased a VICKS vaporizer which really helped for easy breathing at night + I rubbed VICKS Vapor Rub on Ry’s feet and a pepperminty cooling cream on his chest and back after his bath to help with congestion as well. He had a spa treatment every night ! :) He is feeling much better these days and my husband and I are starting to catch up on lost sleep :)

#3 Starting Solids: They say 6 months is the age for starting babies on solids…when I was a baby, my Mom tells me it was 4 months….just the other day I was reading in a parenting magazine and they are now saying babies should be 1 year before introducing solids!  Ryder was not quite 6 months…I was starting to go insane trying to keep up with the demands of breast feeding him throughout the day and into the wee hours of the night. Ry was ready for solids and I could no longer wait for the day he turned 6 months to feed him his first taste of rice cereal and to give my sore nipples a chance to breath! I wasn’t surprised when Ryder gobbled up all the cereal (1 tbsp) I spoon fed him…like a champ! He was ready and so was I!

Without sounding too much like a sales pitch, I have to say the Baby Bullet is an awesome little blender for first time eaters :) I saw the commercial on TV and immediately ordered it off their website (www.babybullet.com). The BBBullet recipe book has lots of great info on feeding baby for the first time and wonderful, healthy, simple recipes to whip up in seconds. So far, Ryder loves sweet potato, avocado, peaches and squash. Next on the menu is plum, carrots and asparagus :) *TIP* Spice up rice cereal(s) by adding a little bit of cinnamon!

Now that we had Ryder eating people food :) , it was time to invest in a high chair so that he could join us at the table. Like most of the baby furniture we have purchased, we did not want to settle for the bulky, plastic, unattractive chairs available in local stores. We wanted something cool, comfortable, of good quality and of course affordable. I highly recommend the Sprout OXO high chair – it is comfy, attractive, affordable  and very easy to assemble (so says my husband).

#4 New Baby Girl: My sister Caitlin gave birth to a beautiful  baby girl on September 23rd – Miss Lacey Winnifred – (named after my Grandmother Winnifred Gass). She is an absolute doll :) Ryder and Lacey are exactly 6 months apart in age…it will be fun watching them grow up together :) This is Cait’s 2nd beautiful baby…she has a handsome 3 year old little man I like to call Jackaroo (Jack). Congratulations to Caitlin and Peter! You make beautiful babies! :)

#5 Music NB Award: Music New Brunswick Week was held in Moncton, October 13-16th. My band and I performed a short, intimate showcase at the Empress Theatre and I also took part in a song circle, sharing the stage with some of my friends including Mike Biggar and Zwerg. I was also  awarded the 2011 Visual Artist of the Year award at the awards ceremony! I appreciate all the votes from MNB members! THANK YOU!!!

My Little Alien

Another summer comes to an end and the feeling of fall starts to hang in the air :) My husband and I always refer to the fall as the  beginning of a NEW YEAR :) Even as a kid it always felt like New Years Eve was the night before school started :) We still say to eachother, “Smells like a back to school day” when that crisp cool smell of fall blows through the trees and tall grass and the crickets sing out and the sun sets on the fields of golden rod. I am more of a spring/summer kinda person…fall is beautiful, but I am not a fan of the cold winter weather it slowly introduces in the months of October and November :/ + I don’t look good in turtle necks :)

Looking back on this summer, we really didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. We went on a few day trips here and there, walked in the park(s), went swimming in our parents pools and spent a few nights at the family cottage in Cambridge Narrows … yet somehow, it all seemed new and refreshing :) Everything was new again looking at it through Ryder’s eyes. It was like introducing a little alien to our world. The sights, the sounds, the textures, and the smells were all fun to explore again. His tiny hands and feet feeling the pool water and waves in the lake … his toes squishing in the muddy beach banks and touching the flowers and grass we sat in at the park. He is seeing/hearing/feeling all these things we do every summer for the first time ever and I am just as excited to introduce him to the places, people and things I loved (still love) as a child growing up.

Even though I am not a fan of winter…the thought of Ryder seeing and touching snow for the first time makes me look forward to it … Christmas will be fun this year!!

This week, my producer, Ed Woodsworth came to Saint John to set up a little recording studio in my home so that we could work on preproduction for my new CD. Normally, I would travel to Cape Breton and work with Ed in the studio (www.soundpark.ca), however , the thought of driving 8 hrs and setting up camp for a week in a hotel with a 5 month old, didn’t exactly sound that exciting :/ … so, Ed came to us and we worked when we could while still keeping a demanding little 5 month old’s feeding and sleep schedule and to be in the comfort of our own home :) It was perfect! To top off the 3 days of fun and productive work on the new CD, the weather was absolutely wonderful and sunny giving us energy and adding to our positive space and making the whole experience enjoyable. The songs for the new record are shaping nicely…I always find the preproduction stage of a new CD to be the most stressful, yet exciting at the same time…it is a time of sharing and letting go of a personal creation…and then hearing the songs develop and grow into something more than I could ever imagine :) I am so looking forward to sharing these songs with the world!!

Sleep Training 101

This time last year, I took 5 pregnancy tests and they all revealed a bright blue + (positive) symbol :) .

Like most Mom’s, I have been obsessed with sleep ever since Ryder entered my life…it’s the first thing people ask me – “Are you getting any sleep?” – “Does he sleep well for you?”…even before he was born people would scare me by saying things like – “Get ready for no sleep!”, or my favourite – “Get your sleep now before the baby is born”… as if you can bank hours of sleep?? I heard this so many times when I was pregnant!! Made my blood boil! Being a big sleeper myself, I was terrified at what I was getting myself into…and what does that really mean any way? “Get ready for no sleep”?? A baby has to sleep at some point don’t they? … Don’t they? :/

Whenever I get together to chat with other Mom’s, sleep is the #1 topic…how many naps our little one takes in the day, what time they go to bed, how we get them to go to sleep, how long they sleep at night and/or how many times they are up through the night, what tricks and trinkets we buy to help soothe them to sleep… I had no idea it was so difficult to fall asleep!!…apparently, it’s something we all have to learn how to do…I had no idea! I thought it would be as natural as breast feeding (NOT)! haha!

One very important sleep fact I learned while reading a book on baby sleep habits, is that an infant should not be awake for more than 1 and 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs. No one ever told me this! I was forever trying to figure out why Ryder was being so fussy during the day, not knowing that he needed to sleep after every hour or so of being awake!! At 5 months old, he now naps 3-4 times a day – once in the morning, then around noon and then again at 3pm…sometimes, depending on how long he sleeps in the afternoon, he will have a short little siesta around 5pm  - then it’s bedtime…on a good night it’s 8pm and pretty well every other night it’s anywhere between 8pm-10pm :/!…we are working on bedtime :/

The only way to get my little man to sleep is to nurse him into a milk coma…then ever so carefully I place him in his crib with fingers crossed that his eyes stay shut when his head meets the mattress! This sometimes takes 2 or 3 tries before he is down and out for the night. Naps are similar, only instead of him sleeping in his crib, he sleeps on my bed as I nurse him to sleep beside me. If we are out and about, he will sometimes sleep in the car (he hates his car seat…most times he bawls until we’ve reached our destination… :/) or if we are at a friends place I will nurse him to sleep in my arms. I really shouldn’t complain, because he will nap and he will sleep for most of the night, it’s the getting him to sleep that troubles me :/. I have read a couple of books on sleep habits and they both say you should put your baby to bed drowsy, but not completely asleep…the idea is for the baby to learn how to fall asleep on their own without any assistance – ie: nursing to sleep….I wish it were this easy… :/

I have tried the “Let Him Cry” method, which requires you to put your baby down in their crib after nursing, drowsy but not asleep, let them fuss/cry for 1 minute, then go in and soothe them until they settle down, leave the room and if they start to fuss again, return to them after 2 minutes and soothe again, (don’t pick them up – just rub their belly or touch their face and tell them it’s sleepy time etc..), leave room, wait 3 mins and repeat adding 1 minute on every time until the baby stops crying and finally falls asleep…an hour into the first night of trying this method and Ryder was a monster…all red in the face and sobbing uncontrollably….broke my heart…I can’t bear to do this to him again anytime soon.

After many discussions with other Mom’s and reading up on sleep books, I find myself willing to try anything to get Ryder to fall asleep on his own without me feeding him into a milk coma every nap/bed time….Just the other day I purchased a battery operated fish mobile, a blankie, a new soother, and a light/bright musical crib aquarium. The soother is a no go…he used to be all about the soother a couple of months ago, but now he won’t have anything to do with it! The blankie (giraffe – name – Cherry) seems to be working. I give it to him when it’s naptime and of course at night…he cuddles, flips, sucks, and gnaws on it (it’s soaked with drool most of the time:)). I would have to say that Cherry is definitely becoming a signal for him that it’s “Sleepy Time”. I have not yet assembled the mobile, but I did hook the cool light/bright aquarium to his crib…and to my surprise this gadget seems to be working too! The light and moving fish catch his attention when I put him in his crib, so instead of fussing and crying, he’ll calmly stare at the aquarium light and fall as sleep…this of course has only worked a few times so far, but it gives me hope knowing he can fall asleep on his own without me beside him!  I know he will get the hang of it…he is after all only 5 months old.

My husband cracks me up…one morning after getting up through the night to feed Ryder, my stomach started to not feel so good and I thought I was going to be sick…I managed to finish feeding Ryder and placed him in his crib awake…of coure he started to fuss, but I was not feeling well and needed to use the washroom ASAP…so I woke my husband and told him I wasn’t feeling well and that he needed to go to Ryder and do whatever he could do to help him go back to sleep….after about 15 mins in the washroom, I opened the door and listened in the hallway expecting to hear crying and fussing, but instead there was silence….I peeked in at Ryder and he was sound asleep with Cherry in his arms and his aquarium light on and the sound of soft gurgling water (this is the sound the aquarium makes)…I went back to my bedroom, all proud of my husband, only to find him sleeping in the same position I left him before running to the washroom…I woke him and asked, “What did you do to help Ryder settle down?”…he sleepily replied “Ahhh….nothing??” . Ryder had fallen back to sleep on his own! Yay!!! So he is getting the hang of it…There is hope!

Nights that Ryder does sleep through the night (which are very rare), I find myself lying awake almost all night just waiting for him to wake up :/. My internal alarm clock wakes me up automatically every morning at 3:30am…I’ll listen hard with fingers crossed…sometimes there won’t be a peep coming from the room across the hall and sometimes my Little Dragon stirs…:)
